A group of Rwandan genocide suspects at the UN tribunal in Tanzania has gone on hunger strike. They are protesting against the decision by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) to transfer a case to Rwanda.

In the middle of the Ntakirutimana trial, the prosecution again asked the judges to take it as well-established fact that genocide occurred in Rwanda. That prompted a spirited challenge from Ramsey Clark who told the judges they had no business writing history. Back in July, the prosecution requested « judicial notice » of some 32 « adjudicated facts » ranging from the date of former President Juvenal Habyarimana\'s plane crash to the existence of a « genocidal plan to exterminate the Tutsi ethnic group in Rwanda.

The major stages in the defense of Jean-Paul Akayezu seem to have been well traced. The Tribunal must still rule on the appearance of two defendants detained in Arusha, as well as on an exhumation procedure and a visit to Taba. The first week of the new session in the trial of Jean-Paul Akayezu ended with hope of conclusion in sight. DespitePresident Kama's statement that the Tribunal would not set a deadline, the completion of the trial is nevertheless on everybodyís mind.

On 2 May, Samuel Musabyimana pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges against him. He also complained of « brutality » and the violation of his rights during the arrest on 26 April. This time, the catholic Church is not in the dock. But it is not far from anyone's mind. Draped in his crimson religious habits, Samuel Musabyimana is not appearing as a simple man before the International Tribunal for Rwanda. He is a representative of the Anglican Church and wishes to emphasise it. The scene created some curiosity on Wednesday 2 May in Arusha.
