Will the former dictator Augusto Pinochet be found criminally responsible for the disappearance of the French priest Etienne Pesle in the aftermath of the coup d'etat of 11 September, 1973 orchestrated by the Chilean general to overthrow President Salvador Allende? The priests's family has asked Paris judge Sophie Clément, who is examining cases filed by the families of five Frenchmen who disappeared in Chile, to rule on the question.

The first trial of the former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet could take place in France - without him. On 22 October, the Paris prosecutor's office called for the case to be referred before the Paris criminal court, where the former president would be tried in absentia for the "abduction and torture" of several French nationals and Franco-Chileans who disappeared between 1973 and 1975.
